Review: Nivea In-Shower Body Lotion Skin Conditioner (Normal Skin Sea Minerals)

... That is potentially the longest name for a product I have ever come across. So, I had heard and seen a lot about Nivea's new innovation for getting soft skin without having to go through the annoying phase after shower of putting on lotion and then waiting for that to dry before putting on clothes that I absolutely had to try it out. Any product that promises that (and is on sale) has my immediate attention, as I hate feeling sticky after putting on lotion. I settled for the normal skin version even though my skin is on the dry side, but I simply didn't know how I feel about putting on something that sinks into my skin that I am allergic to (hint: big allergic reactions to almonds), so sea minerals had to do the job of making my skin soft.

It was very easy to use in the shower, where you use it after having washed yourself with shower gel. Just on with it, work it and wash off. There is seriously nothing complicated about it, which I love so much... there is nothing worse than overcomplicated products with detailed instructions or bad packaging because some products are just child proofed. Furthermore, I liked it actually lived up to its name by looking like a good mix between lotion and conditioner... the name is spot on! But essentially, did it work? Did I feel my skin get any softer? Oh yes! It worked right from the first try, even without it being for dry skin! There was no ‘I wonder when this will work’ phase because it did its job instantly. I loved that! The product did what it promised and my skin feels softer after every time I have used it while I also avoid feeling sticky.

The big question - would I purchase it again?

No, I wouldn't.

I know it might seem weird after I have only listed positive things about the product. I get that, but - and that is a serious but - there is one negative thing to the skin conditioner that wouldn't make me purchase it again and that is the fact it has aluminium as one of its ingredients. Aluminium is not a good thing to have in your products - it really isn't good for your health. It is generally seen as an ingredients in deodorants - check if yours has it - so many are talking about changing to coconut oil mixed with something else instead, which I really would if I could but coconut is one of those smells that makes me throw up. I really can't take the smell. So instead, I am limiting the skin products with aluminium I use and this product isn't that necessary. However, I just gotta get this out, I don't actually understand the need to put aluminium in a lotion... like, seriously, why? I checked my other body lotions in my bathroom and none of them has aluminium as an ingredients, but I will start happily use them than the skin conditioner. So not cool, Nivea!

Have you tried Nivea's In-Shower Body Lotion Skin Conditioner? What do you feel about aluminium in skin products?

Until next time,
Mia

Currently reading: the Divergent series by Veronica Roth

I know, I know, I know, there was no blog post this Monday. I felt slightly bad about it, but overall I didn’t because I was admittedly rather stressed out by my lecturers and my workload, and just needed some room to de-stress and relax with a book. And I did just that, but with a trilogy if you recognize the title of this blog post… Actually, I finished them all in two days, but thought I would write a blog post about them because the whole hype of the books and the movie.
My friend had recommended the trilogy to me, so to make it up to her for not reading the Hunger Games series I decided to read the Divergent series. I read the first book, Divergent, in under 3 hours before I had to go to bed and then took the two other books, Insurgent and Allegiant, the next day as I felt I needed to know what the hype was about (and because I am a fast reader).

This is probably a very unpopular opinion of the series, but they beyond disappointed me. Seriously, I am so disappointed and for the life of me can’t understand where all that hype came from. I am honestly not that critical of books, despite reading many ‘intelligent’ books as required by my education, and I am actually a huge fan of YA books in general, but these… I really don’t think they lived up to the standard of many other YA books I have read in the past.

The whole concept of the books of you being divided into fractions, society is build up differently and the rebels might not be better than those ruling society before is beyond fascinating and refreshing. I honestly really liked that, but sadly, it only worked for the first book, as the idea/concept was never further evolved. Why didn’t you evolve the idea, Roth?! It was such a brilliant idea! Tris is kinda on the border of unlikable and likable character, then tilts to the likable side, but I liked it was a fine line because it makes it rather interesting despite the main character has (at least in my opinion) to be likable.
However, the whole ‘let’s fight the people who has the power’ becomes so redundant as it literally happens over and over again without the details or the reason are changed, making the parallels too obvious and overused. Furthermore, the constant trust issues Tris and Four have with each other… It becomes annoying, despite actually liking them, and boring because it gets to the point where they only have trust issues and there aren’t any happy moments (not that they had many to begin with) that make up for it. It has to be a balancing act if it has to work… and it simply didn’t. Oh, and please don’t get me started on the ending… It was too out of character for me.

I really only liked the first book, Divergent, and I will probably read that one again and hopefully see the movie at some point (because Theo is handsome and Shailene is amazing), but Insurgent and Allegiant … sorry. I am not reading those again.

Have you read the Divergent series? What do you think about it?

Until next time,
Mia

DIY: Print & Quote Pictures

… I am not happy with the title of this blog post, but seeing as I can’t come up with anything better at the moment I suppose I have to survive with it. It doesn’t please me, however. Anyways, this blog post is a DIY to make something decorative for your apartment/house’s walls without spending a lot of money or a lot of effort into the actual making step.

Excuse the bead-heart decoration!
This first idea is a picture with the Danish word ‘hygge’ and below the word the definition of it that I looked up in a dictionary. I realize not everybody reading this is going to be a Dane or able to read Danish, but you can make this with any kind of word you like and in whatever language you prefer. I got the inspiration from a store called Inspiration (yes, that is the name of it) where I spotted a picture having some text about hygge. As I obviously didn’t want to spend a fortune on buying that picture and honestly thought I could do it myself, I turned to my computer, word and a dictionary. I have absolutely no idea what the picture from Inspiration actually said as I was a distance away and weren’t wearing my glasses, so really, it was just inspiration. I printed it out on my university’s printer and put it in an IKEA frame… and I am pretty pleased with the result.

Now the second idea… The quote has been all over Tumblr quite the amount of times, and every time I find it really entertaining and amusing. Obviously, I couldn’t just leave it at that. I could like with the ‘hygge’ picture just made something in Word and printed it out, but I felt I needed to do something different so they wouldn’t look alike. From my book clutch DIY project I had a lot of old book pages lying around, so I decided to reuse some of them (trust me, you will make mistakes) and wrote on them. It took some tries and it still isn’t the most perfect one, but it has a lot of charm. Instead of a new frame or in the likes of the IKEA frame, I found one of the old frames I have and used it instead as it makes the overall look even more charming.

‘Hygge’ picture – what you need,
-       A typing program (e.g. Word).
-       A printer (I used one of the printers at my university).
-       Paper (I used A3).
-       A frame (I bought one from IKEA that had been reduced in price).

Step by step,
1.     Open your typing program.
2.     Type whatever word and definition.
3.     Save it on your computer (just to be certain and/or if you want to change in it later).
4.     Print it.
5.     Frame it.

‘Home is where your wi-fi connects automatically’ – what you need,
-       Old book pages (books can be purchased for no money at flea markets).
-       A black marker.
-       An old frame (I bought mine at the local thrift shop).

Step by step,
1.     Rip out a couple of pages from an old book.
2.     Select the page you want to use.
3.     Write on the page, though perhaps practice on a couple of pages before.
4.     Frame it.

Would this DIY be something you would want to try yourself?

Until next time,
Mia

Midweek Post: Skincare & Make-up Remover

So, my package from eChemist finally arrived and thus I decided to make a blog post about it, even though it is Wednesday and not Thursday, meaning I am deviating slightly from my original schedule. But not to worry (I say this mainly to myself), I promise there will be a blog post up tomorrow – a DIY! I actually shouldn’t make this sound exciting as there is the possibility of people being disappointed with it… aw man!

Moving on with what I actually purchased at eChemist! First and most importantly, but also the reason I actually made an order, I bought my daily cream from Avène. I am really low on my old jar and honestly feared the worst, so the postman had the best timing by delivering the package today. The Rich Compensating Cream is perfect for my dry skin, and it has in general worked wonders by also improving my skin dramatically to the better. I love it, basically. I purchase the cream at eChemist instead of the local pharmacy because it is so much cheaper – I bought the cream when it wasn’t on offer, but I still saved 100 DKK (approx. 10 GBP) compared to the standard price in Denmark!

Also, I decided to try the make-up remover from Bioderma as everybody seems to be raving about it. I am slightly skeptic because I don’t really like make-up removers as they make my skin feel either dry or oily. Yucky! But I will try to forget my bad experiences and give this a decent test-run seeing it is from the sensitive series. I believe I purchased the 100 ml bottle for 40 DKK (approx. 4 GBP)… I don’t know if this is considered cheap for the amount, but you can’t purchase Bioderma in Denmark yet. It is apparently coming to Denmark, but I don’t know when or at what price.

I promise I will do a review on both products, especially Bioderma as I have high expectations to it after all the reviews I have read on it.

What products do you use to take care of your skin? And what products to remove your make-up?

Until next time,
Mia

Just in: Make-up, Computer & Tea Towel

Yes, I have realized that these things are quite the mix. Nevertheless, they have entered my life – some for a longer time than others – and will be considered a precious item to me until they mess with me. Obviously and undoubtedly, the computer will be the thing to mess with me at some point as computers always do that. Damn it! But hopefully that will be a good while away, so I shall shift my focus…

*shifts focus*

The deer printed tea towel isn’t going to stay in my apartment for long, as it is an intended birthday present for my little brother. Admittedly, there is some time till his birthday comes around, but it was reduced in price and I like being a little ahead of things as my brother is so difficult to buy presents for. Why are guys so difficult to be presents for? I really don’t get.

My old computer is still alive, but only barely… and barely means I will use it for Photoshop, even though it protests every time I do so. Sorry! So, I needed a new computer and was so lucky to receive a scholarship to pay for the costs of one. After many problems with the shop where I bought this baby (Acer Aspire S5 ultrabook) in, I finally got it with me home and it works like a dream. It is really fast… and it has a magic flip, which is so entertaining to play with *looks innocent* It will be used for university work and daily life (though not Photoshop as I tell myself) only.

As for make-up products, I bought Revlon’s colorburst in number 040 rendezvous and Sleek Blush By 3 in number 367 Lace on Amazon. Both products are in such beautiful colours… *sighs at the prettiness* The colours make me super impatient to try them, although not so impatient that I can be bothered to put on make-up in the weekend just to try them out. Sorry, but my skin needs make-up free days. None of the products can be purchased in Denmark – Sleek is a UK product, I believe, and Revlon… yeah, why aren’t you coming to Denmark? So one is forced to turn to Amazon, although I adore shopping at Amazon… Products are cheaper than in Denmark and their customer service is seriously the best.

I had intended to include two more products, but my package from eChemist hasn’t showed up yet so I decided against mentioning them. Maybe at another point?

What have you purchased resently? Anything that makes you sigh contentedly by just staring at it?

Until next time,

Mia

Allergy Season Essentials 2014

Hands up if you suffer from some kind of pollen allergy? *personally raises both hands*

I suffer from every pollen type (grass, etc.) and that makes spring and summer, well, not my favourite seasons despite the warmer weather and the sun making its appearance, offering the possibility of gaining a tan if you are lucky. The weather really tests me every year, annoyingly so! I have had allergies for 16-17 years by now, so I have l learned what works, what is great to bring along with you every time you leave home, what doesn’t work, what to do if the allergy symptoms get a good hold of me, and so on. It has taken a really long time to perfect with many try-and-fail rounds to get things right for me.

Some of the things below that I find essentials will obviously differ – what my symptoms are and what helps soothes them may not work just as great for you.

My essentials!
Medicine:
I have tried so many types and brands over the years, where many of them didn’t really alleviate the symptoms I had and caused me to stay indoors most of the time. I believe that the pros should outweigh the cons, always, and that just isn’t the case with a lot of the medicine for me. So in time, I have found that easily accessible Benadryl and a nasal spray from the local super market works best for me.

Sunglasses:
Sunglasses is an absolute must if you are in some way outdoors – tanning, riding your bike, taking a walk, shopping, eating an ice cream, etc.. It protects your eyes from not only the sun, but also from pollen.
Mine are from Mads Nørgaard’s 2013 collection and cost me 300 DKK (30 GPS), which I find is cheap for something that is extremely essential for me. I do have 2-3 other pairs, as I keep them for many years, but I like my orange ones best.

Gel masks:
I honestly look like a complete idiot wearing the orange one, I have been told that many and many times over. But when you pull one out from the fridge (it needs to be cold) and put it on, your eyes that are really beyond itches and red really appreciate the coldness. The coldness helps calming the itching down. I don’t care looking like an idiot if just my eyes don’t itch like crazy.

Cooling gel:
It comes in a very practical small tube (that seems to have endless amounts of gel in it) you can easily put into your handbag whenever you go. You put the clear gel under your eyes and it cools the area downs. It works just as a gel mask, but is something you put directly on your skin. Many differed brands make these – I just opted for one I could buy at my local pharmacy.

App (link to read more about; http://www.astma-allergi.dk/ditmobilepollental):
I am convinced there is/are similar apps in other countries, but seeing as I am a Dane it only makes sense that I have a Danish app. The app tells you every day what the pollen numbers of your favourite pollen type is and also, if there are any warnings, in Copenhagen and Viborg. It is so practical, and the best part of it is, it doesn’t cost anything to download.

There are obviously other things you can do (in Denmark there are some recommendations that would feel redundant if I were to mention them as well) and there are far more products you can use to help you get through the seasons, but these are simply what I have picked that helps me out immensely and what I consider my essentials.

Do you suffer from pollen allergy? What is/are your essential(s)?

Until next time,
Mia ♥

MAC Make-up Consultation

A couple of days ago (Friday, actually) I went and got a make-up consultation at the MAC stand in the department store in my city. In Denmark MAC can only be found in the big department store Magasin, although the stores are located several places in the country. Anyways, I had booked a time as I thought, and still think, it was a great way to try out some of MAC’s products without having to actually buy them first. It is wise as MAC products aren’t the cheapest of the bunch. It was a really nice experience, I must say! The woman who did my make-up was very kind and simply found whatever I wanted to try out from their newest collection, along with their basic products like foundation, concealer, etc.. I would recommend it to others, if only to get your make-up done prettily for the day (and that is really nice, admit it!).
Totally unphotogeneric me… oh dear *pouts*
I have tried to the best of my ability to find the products I tried and also, below listed by immediate opinion of them. Obviously, I haven’t tested them out for a longer time seeing this was a make-up consultation, but I did have some overall thoughts on them.

Make-up details,
Foundation: Matchmaster SPF 15 Foundation in 1.0.
Opinion: It felt very light to wear and provided a light to medium coverage, which I really liked. I don’t like heavy foundations in general, so this one appealed to me. However, it took quite a while to get it blended nicely and that was perhaps the biggest downside to it (along with the price!).

Concealer: Mineralize Concealer in 15.
Opinion: It seemed to provide okay coverage for under eye dark circles and the formula was light and seemingly easy to work with. I think the price is a bit too high for what the product actually did for me.

Powder: Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – I can’t remember the shade.
Opinion: I honestly wasn’t wowed by the powder; it didn’t feel special from the powders I have tried over the years. In the grand scheme of things I am not really wowed or into powders, so for me a less expensive one can do the job just as well.

Blush: Mineralize Blush in Petal Rose.
Opinion: The blush was a really pretty colour and it appeared to be quite pigmented as she didn’t need much to create the effect on my apple cheeks.

Mascara: In Extreme Dimension Lash in Black.
Opinion: I wasn’t attracted to the mascara at all – and not only because it had a rubber brush! The brush didn’t ‘grab’ my eye lashes well, but instead made them clash together. Perhaps, the mascara would have been great if I had long lashes, but as I don’t, and instead have many, it really wasn’t for me.

Eye shadow: Veluxe Pearlfusion Shadow: Greenluxe.
Opinion: The colours didn’t really suit me well, in my opinion, but there were few in the new collection I believe actually could have suited me. I am hands down a naturals-browns kinda girl, which the collection didn’t center around and thus tried something out of my comfort zone. It was fun to try something new! The quality of the eye shadows seemed really great – they were really pigmented, so she didn’t have to use much.

Paint: Paints in Base Light.
Opinion: I honestly didn’t get the meaning of the paint. Apparently, it was different than a primer, yet how it was different  I didn’t get.

Lipgloss: Cremesheen Glass in Star Quality.
Opinion: As you can see on the picture below, I loved the lipgloss so much it had to leave with me. I honestly prefer lipsticks and lip crayons/sticks/whatever over lipgloss because I often kind that lipglosses are sticky. I really dislike sticky lipglosses. This one isn’t sticky at all and it has the prettiest coral-pinkish colour. The price was the huge downside to it, but I felt I would use it a lot and really love it, so I decided to purchase it as the only product.

Star Quality (love the name!) and a swatch.
When you get a make-up consultation, unless it is specifically listed, you don’t have to buy any of the things you try. You are seriously not obligated to do so – I wasn’t obligated to do so… but I just did because I really liked the product.

Have you been to a make-up consultation before? Did you like it?

Until next time,
Mia ♥

Saturday; Outfit of the Day – Birthday Party

Another rare OOTD post… and on a Saturday at that. Amazing. Yes, please note the sarcasm.

Anyways, as I really don’t have a lot of time before I leave my apartment, I am heading to two of my friends’ birthday party and I confidently thought I would sneak in an OOTD post as there won’t be many of them in general and I liked the last one with the Oscars. I have decided to keep it completely simple, although gone for a more… put-together look. Does that make sense? I am not even sure it makes sense to me, but just more formal-ish like than what I normally do.

I have chosen to wear my black Selected dress, which I am absolutely in love with… the quality is amazing, especially considering the price, and I just love the cut. It can be worn as an everyday dress or for a more special event – personally, I use it for both. I typically buy dresses (and in general clothes) I can dress up and down depending on the occasion as it gives more wear out of the dresses. I have paired it with my trustworthy Decadent handbag and as for shoes, we don’t really wear shoes of any kind inside, so I will choose some random pair. For jewelry, I didn’t go all out, but instead opted for the pieces I wear on an everyday basis. I could have done something more I suppose, but yeah, I am a bit lazy when it comes to jewelry. Make-up is also kept simple, though the lipgloss from MAC will brighten up the look and came it feel more spring like with its coral-pink colour.

The picture is from Selected's website as the details of the dress
is more viewable than what I can capture.
Clothes detail,
Sofia LS Smock Dress FJ-EX from Selected (Selected Online)

Jewelry details,
Timex ‘gold’ watch (bought at a flea market).
Necklace (bought at a flea market).
Black squares earrings (bought in a shop called Tryllespejlet, though I know they are from the Nederland).
Black, shiny adjustable ring from Pilgrim.
‘Faith’ bracelet from Etsy (CREATIVEdesignbyTHAO).
Tea saucer from Royal Copenhagen, 2162 (bought at a flea market).

Make-up details,
Base: MaxFactor’s Weightless Foundation SPF 10 in number light ivory 40 and Missha’s Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 in number 21.
Mascara: Clinique’s high definition lashes in number 01 black and MaxFactor’s 2000 Calorie dramatic volume in black.
Eye shadow primer: INK by Dennis Knudsen in number 01 matt.
Quickliner: Clinique’s Quickliner for Eyes in number 03 roast coffee.
Eyeshadows: Dior’s eyeshadows in numbers 844, 031 and 770.
Lipgloss: MAC’s Cremesheen Glass in Star Quality.

What are you doing today? What do you feel about spring coming soon?

Until next time,
Mia

Review: TRESemmé’s Volume & Lift Mousse

TRESemmé, TRESemmé, TRESemmé… I admittedly feel like sighing because it is the first time I have been disappointed with one of their products. That in itself just sucks as I obviously wanted to be wowed by this product so bad. But I wasn’t. Damn it.

Maybe I should start on a brighter note? There are actually qualities I liked about this product, even though they aren’t of overwhelming number. The first good quality of this product is the humidity resistance – I hadn’t thought much about that fact when I purchased the products, but as Danish weather at the moment is really changing (when isn’t it changing?!) it has proved to be very handy indeed and I haven’t experienced the same kind of electric hair like I normally do. So thumbs up for that! Secondly, I really like the formula… the foam is really lightweight, non-sticky and fluffy-like, making it incredible easy to work (and play) with. That really shouldn’t be underestimated.

… Is it sad I only like two qualities? Probably.

The truth is I am quite disappointed with the ‘volume & lift’ part, and perhaps even more so when it is a part of the title and it says ‘medium hold’ on the back of the bottle. Basically, the essential of the product isn’t up to pair. I have tried this mousse countless of times by now, and will continue with it until I have emptied it as I can’t afford to simply throw it away and purchase something else, but every time after I have blow-dried my hair I look in the mirror and think, ‘What volume? What lift?’ The difference it makes is minimal. Whenever I have tried to compare it to how my hair would look after a blow dry without it, I gotta admit the difference wasn’t striking at all. That honestly annoys me.

Perhaps what annoys and disappoints me even more, is the fact that TRESemmé usually make some really good products and, as listed before, this is the first time I have been disappointed with one of their products. When you pay 90 DKK (9 GPS) – that is right! Everything is expensive in Denmark – you want it to be great… or beyond great, actually. I think it is a lot of money on a product that just doesn’t deliver.

I wouldn’t recommend TRESemmé’s Volume & Lift Mousse to anybody as there surely are far better products for the same price.

Do you have a volume product you would recommend me instead?

Until next time,
Mia

DIY: The Sequin Hairband

the beginning of the project!
I absolutely love hairbands and wear them often to ‘spice’ up an everyday outfit! I think they are a great accessory to any coloured and styled hair you may have at the moment, and can help a perhaps dull outfit become more exciting for any occasion. There is no end to how great an accessory they can be!
Now, I purchased most of my hairbands some years back and then their style was spot on with whatever fashion that was rocked out. Fast forward to now and most, if not all, are really… yeah, outdated to say the least. Instead of throwing a perfectly good hairband out and purchasing a new one, I have altered a few of mine with little means and the results have always been many compliments, fascination and wonder. Apparently people do pay attention to hairbands!

The sequin hairband is my third DIY hairband project and my third favourite (I may, perhaps, at a later point show one of my other), where I had chosen I wanted something subtle, yet could stand out. Yeah, that didn’t even make a lot of sense in my head. You can obviously choose many different colours to do one in, but I opted for black/dark blue. I am really happy with the result, although I was surprised by the amount of time it took to finish it.

me wearing the completed hairband... sorry about the quality of the picture!
What you need to make this,
·         A hairband (one that is covered in some fabric).
·         Sequins… loads of sequins (buy them on sale).
·         Beads... same amount of beads as sequins (you can buy beads in most thrift shops).
·         Needle and thread.
·         Patience!

Step by step,
-       Get your needle and thread ready.
-       Sew into the hairband first to secure the thread, and don’t worry, you don’t be able to see the knots of the thread in the end.
-       The thread goes through the sequin, the bead and then through the same sequin again.
-       As you have tightened the sequin in place, you sew into the hairband again.
-       Repeat the above steps necessary to complete your hairband.

Note: You don’t have to COMPLETELY cover your hairband in sequins, as in, I did sequins until it reached the tip of my ear (I put on the hairband and measured). I did that due to the possibility of using the hairband for many different hair styles, but also… it can get rather itchy, I find, with sequins and beads behind your ear.

What do you think of this DIY? Could you image updating one of your hairbands?

Until next time,
Mia

Sunday; Outfit of the Day – The Oscars

Now, you shouldn’t expect to see many OOTD posts as I will probably only do them when I am actually doing/attending something exciting... and that isn’t that often, I am afraid to admit. However, today I am attending something exciting – the viewing of the Oscars! Why does that sound so much more exciting in my head? But yes, I am going to watch the Oscars with the other English students.

I have opted for my grey and black Saint Tropez dress, which can be dressed up and down depending on the accessories, and paired it with my Sofie Schnoor glitter sneakers. I bought them last year, but didn’t get to wear them much as I bought them rather late in the season… They are good quality sneakers and they are comfortable to walk in. All my necessary things like purse, phone, keys, etc. will be in my trustworthy (and beloved) black Decadent handbag. As for make-up I have decided to keep it simple and really close to my daily routine as I will probably be home around 6 AM, but I have decided to add a red lipstick to the look. You really can’t go wrong with red lipstick… and it is very Oscars appropriate.

Details,
Base: MaxFactor’s Weightless Foundation SPF 10 in number light ivory 40 (it is suitable for sensitive skin and if you have big pores) and Missha’s Perfect Cover BB Cream SPF 42 in number 21.
Concealer: MaxFactor’s Mastertouch under-eye concealer in number 303 ivory (not recommendable!).
Mascara: Clinique’s high definition lashes in number 01 black and MaxFactor’s 2000 Calorie dramatic volume in black (it is good if you don’t have long lashes, but instead many lashes).
Blush: Rimmel London’s Power Blush in number 001 Santa Rose.
Lipstick: MAC lipstick (matte) in Russian Red (it is the classic red lipstick).

Are you going to watch the Oscars? Who are you hoping will win?

Until next time,
Mia
